What is Mini Medical School?

Midwestern University's 2009 Fall Mini Medical School is a four-week medical education program open to anyone in the community interested in personal and public heath care issues.  It is an opportunity to learn about topics discussed in Medical School.

Each lecture will be given by a health care professional at Midwestern University in Downers Grove, IL.  Midwestern University is the home of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Chicago College of Pharmacy and the College of Health Sciences.

Who should attend?

Everyone in the community is invited to attend.  We welcome students of all ages (adult, college and high school) who are interested in learning about interesting and important health care topics.

Topic:

  H1N1 - "Swine Flu"
This lecture will provide attendees with the basics on how to decode information on H1N1 influenza, from a historical, epidemiological and virological perspective.  Up-to-date information will be provided on strategies to avoid the disease, as well as the projected impact a flu pandemic.

Speaker:

Balbina Plotkin, Ph.D., M.Ed.
Dr. Plotkin is a Microbiologist with over 20 yrs experience in training Medical Students and other health professionals in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.  She received her doctorate from the University of Tennessee and Masters in Higher Education from Loyola.  Her area of research is the interaction between human hormones and pathogens with regards to how hormones, including DHEA and insulin, affect bacterial response to the immune system and antimicrobial agents.

Role of the Hospitalist in delivering healthcare

This lecture will provide attendees with an understanding of what a  "Hospitalist" is and how hospital- based medicine has evolved since its inception.  The topics of business practices, patients safety initiatives, education, and other external factors and how they have guided this emerging profession will be discussed.

Speaker:

Isaac Kirstein, D.O.,  FACOI, CS
Dr. Kirstein is board certified in Internal Medicine and currently practices as a Hospitalist for Wellgroup Health Partners. He has created several academic hospitalist practices. He is currently the Associate Dean for Postgraduate Medical Education at Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, which is his alma mater.

.Anesthesiology - Airway Management:  The First Phase of a Successful Anesthetic
This presentation will cover the basic anatomy and physiology of the adult airway, pre-anesthetic assessment of the adult airway and current management techniques covering varying patient populations.  Following airway management we shall discuss Anesthesia as a career and the advances this career can take in the future.

Mr. Michael Alexa, CRNA, MS

Michael Alexa is currently working for Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL.  He received his BA at Augustana college in 1990, then received his BSN from Aurora University in 1995 and completed his MS and CRNA at DePaul University and Evanston Northwestern School of Anesthesia in 2006.

Topic: Introduction to principles of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine
The purpose of this lecture will be to expose attendees to basic information about Chinese Medicine, with a specific focus on the role of acupuncture in maintaining/restoring the body’s energy balance and in treating a variety of ailments or medical conditions.
Speaker: Felise S. Zollman, M.D.
Dr. Zollman is a western trained physician.  After completing her undergraduate degree at UCLA, she attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.  Her medical internship was undertaken at UCLA, and her Neurology residency at the University of Southern California.  She is a Board Certified Neurologist with subspecialty Certification in Neurorehabilitation.  In 2002, she attended UCLA’s Medical Acupuncture for Physicians training program, and subsequently became Board Certified in Medical Acupuncture by the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture in 2004.  Dr. Zollman is Medical director of the Brain Injury program at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

All classes are held on the campus of Midwestern University at 555 31st Street in Downers Grove, IL.  Free parking is also available.  (Visit Mapquest for directions.)

What is the cost?

The cost for the four week program is $25.  Participants will be accepted on a first come first serve basis.  Please sign up today.
