What
is Mini Medical School? |
Midwestern University's 2010 Spring Mini Medical
School is a four-week medical education program open to anyone in the
community interested in personal and public heath care issues. It is an
opportunity to learn about topics discussed in Medical School.
Each lecture will be given by a
health care professional at
Midwestern
University in Downers Grove, IL. Midwestern University is the home
of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Chicago College of
Pharmacy and the College of Health Sciences.
Everyone in the community is invited to attend. We welcome students of
all ages (adult, college and high school) who are interested in learning
about interesting and important health care topics.

Rheumatoid
Arthritis
This lecture will provide attendees with a basic understanding of the
pathogenesis of the autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis. It will
focus on the immunological aspects of the disease progression and will
also discuss newer biological therapies. |

Speaker: |
Michael V.
Volin, Ph.D.
Dr. Volin is an Associate Professor in
the Department of Microbiology and Immunology with over 10 yrs
experience in training medical professional students in Immunology and
Pathology. He received his doctorate in Pathology from the University of
Chicago and did a post-doctoral fellowship in the Division of
Rheumatology at Northwestern University. In his research he identifies
and studies the role of novel inflammatory mediators involved in
rheumatoid arthritis.

Female Reproductive System:
The lecture will
focus on the basic anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive
system. The monthly hormonal cycle will be outlined at a basic level.
The effects on the hormonal cycle on structural changes in the female
reproductive organs will be discussed both the gross and microscopic
level. |

Speaker: |
Teresa Dombrowski, Ph.D.
Dr. Dombrowski has been a faculty
member in the Department of Anatomy in the Chicago College of
Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University since 1982. She obtained
her Ph.D. in Anatomy from Loyola University of Chicago. She currently
serves the University as Dean of Students. |

.Brain
Attacks This
lecture will provide attendees with information on stroke or “brain
attacks”. Topics will include basic brain anatomy and function,
cerebral circulation, different stroke types and a discussion of common
stroke presentations. |

Robert R. Terreberry, Ph.D.
Dr. Terreberry is
a classically-trained Anatomist with over 20 years of experience
training medical students and other health care professionals gross
anatomy and neuroscience. He received his doctorate in anatomy from
Loyola University Chicago. |

Panel discussion on
Programs at Midwestern University
Student representatives from the PA, PT, OT and
Pharmacy programs will be panelists for a discussion on their academic
degree programs at Midwestern University.
There will be a short (25 minute) lecture on a
topic TBD prior to the panel discussion. |

Discussion Leader: |
Tana
Lucas, Education Specialist, Midwestern University
Ms. Lucas lectures on the
topic of Career Development with an emphasis on Leadership and
Management Skills for the Physician Executive. She
is a qualified
administrator of the Myers-Briggs Type Instrument© and uses
this to explore aspects of group dynamics.
She is nearing the
completion of her Masters of Science degree in Training and Development. |

classes are held on the campus of Midwestern University at 555 31st

The cost
for the four week program is $25. Participants will be accepted on
